The Little Mermaid was a movie I liked and continue to like, despite the obvious Sue-ish qualities of the main character; as a consequence, I was overjoyed when I discovered an illustrated copy of Hans Christian Andersen's original version. I am a strong supporter of happy endings; the trauma of reading the real ending was intense. I've recovered, grown as a person, and eventually acknowledged that Disney is a tad silly - but I still really want to get my hands on a copy of the movie. ^^ And I can still hardly abide anything but a happy ending.
Anyway, Ariel was done in somewhere under an hour, with plain pencil, and a screenshot from the movie displayed on my computer while I drew. This image hails from the scene in which Ariel first meets Eric, while she is wrapped in a sail, right after Max almost runs her over. I think she looks remarkably cute. ^^ There's a little more erasing and touch-up that needs to happen with her hair, but overall, I'm fairly satisfied with her.
Thank you. ^^ I know - it is a shame. Hans Christian Andersen probably would hate the movie for what it did to his story. I was actually a little surprised by Pocahontas - I was just waiting for them to invent some cockamamie reason for John Smith to stay, but they restrained themselves! I was shocked. ^^
But I do love their animation. It's amazing, when you think about it - the amount of time it must take just to draw it, never mind coloring. ^^
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
